Lung cancer screening

Lung cancer begins in the tissues of the lungs, usually in the cells lining the airways. It is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide in both men and women.

In early stages, lung cancer may cause no symptoms. In more advanced stages, it may lead to:

  • Persistent or worsening cough
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood
  • Hoarseness
  • Constant fatigue
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Recurrent respiratory infections (such as pneumonia or bronchitis)

Lung cancer is often diagnosed in advanced stages, which limits treatment options. Early detection is critical—it can lead to more effective treatment and significantly improve survival rates.

Who should be screened?

For people aged 50 to 80, screening is recommended if they currently smoke or have a history of heavy smoking.

The screening test for lung cancer is a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan, which uses lower amounts of radiation than a regular CT scan.
