Prostate cancer develops in the prostate gland, a part of the male reproductive system located just below the bladder. It is one of the most common cancers in men, especially after the age of 50.
In its early stages, prostate cancer often causes no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they may include:
- Difficulty urinating
- Weak or interrupted urine flow
- Increased frequency of urination, especially at night
- Pain or burning during urination
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Pain in the lower back, hips, or pelvis (in advanced cases)
Why Early Detection Matters
Detecting prostate cancer at an early stage greatly increases the chances of a cure. In many cases, early-stage cancer can be managed with less invasive treatments, or even active surveillance, where treatment is delayed while the cancer is closely monitored.
Screening Recommendations
Men between the ages of 55 and 69 should speak with their doctor about the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening. Those at higher risk—such as men with a family history of prostate cancer or certain genetic factors—may need to begin screening at a younger age.
